Durga Saptashati

I am not very good at reading the Saptashati in transliterated form. Can one derive benefit by actively listening to the verses through a tape recording?

no prob, I'll delete the duplicate.

my copy from the Ramakrishna Math in Kolkata has an introductory bit in English that suggests the best way is to recite the Chandi from memory without singing it, reading it aloud comes next, and then I believe listening to a recitation. I put it on my iPod and listen to it on the train to work.

so do you think listening to it has benefits too?

depends on what benefits you are looking for.

if you take the RM peeps at what they say, then yes. personally, I'm getting pronunciation and comprehension lessons from it as opposed to any spiritual benefits (other than what I glean from the text itself). but I'm sure it can't hurt. I've been listening pretty constantly to stuff that always promises "all wealth and happiness will be bestowed upon the listener by merely hearing this holy text" and the money ain't flowing in - but that's not why I listen to them anyway.

if you're following that first line of thinking tho, be aware that they warn you not to listen to or chant the Chandi at night unless you recite the Ratri Sukta first.

have you been studying the translation?

I have been told that Durga Saptashati is a good remedy for Rahu afflication - that is my reason for wanting to know whether their are benefits by just listening to it.

I have tried to pronunce it - but my tongue get twisted! I am hoping that just listening and following the text would have some kind of impact on my energies

(p.s. which narration of Saptashati do you listen to on your ipod?)

heh, my chart has a big nasty Shani.

well, like they say, chanting it is supposed to be the best, but hearing it is supposed to be good as well. I find that reciting a text along with a recording is helpful with pronunciation. yesterday I was doing that all day with the Kali Sahasranama.

I have the 4 cd set of Sri Sri Chandi recited by Swami Sarvagananda put out by the Ramakrishna Mission. I picked it up in Calcutta.

From personal experience I'd say even just listening has profound benifits. I've been going through some really profound trouble over the past few years which resulted in total insomnia. I have very strongly placed rahu in my chart and moon in aries in the eight house too! I picked up a recording of Durga Saptashati and started listening everynight. It was the only way I got any sleep. And I'm not being cute either. Also if you just listen to it every night, before you know it, you will know passages of it and be able to recite. Especially the devisuktam part, which works as a nice daily prayer.
I would just keep listening and reading it until it sinks in and not worry about being able to recite the whole thing in sanskrit from the start. Just make it part of your life. Even just reading it is uplifting and helpful. Thank you for reminding me. I'm going to go crack it open right now!

I guess the Ratri Sukta warning didn't have much creedence in your case, eh?

personally I listen to it after dark as well.

I was going to ask you about the ratri sukta warning, but then figured better I just don't know. Ignorance is bliss.

Frankly my only problem is that I always doze out at:

Ya devi saarvabhooteshu nidra roopen sansthita

But thank God. If it wasn't for the power of Mahamaya I wouldn't get any sleep at all for like the past 2 years.

My personal weird issues aside, really just because one can't recite the whole thing from memory in perfect sanskrit with nyasa and kavach and full visualizations, shouldn't mean you can't benifit from exposure to it. Read it read it read it. Listen listen listen. It rubs off. Rahu dasa lasts a long time, make it a multi year project to help you through, that's my plan.

Jason, do you feel the Durga Saptashati helped you with the problems caused by Rahu? Rahu is obviously a demon - and i'm told he does a runner upon hearing the Durga Saptashati!

Incidently i have also been reciting another version of Durga Saptashati - called Chandi Ki Vaar. See here for more detail - This version is written by Guru Gobind Singh (tenth Sikh Guru) and it is much shorter. I have recited this twice so far I am finding it to be benefical - I used to get frequent nightmares but since reciting had not had any.

I'd say its helped me with Rahu issues and all other issues. More and more I feel that the real cure to issues in one's chart is simply sincere devotion to God in whatever form most attracts you. But that's me.

Have you seen Shree Ma's follower's Devi Mandir group on Yahoo?

They are working together online to learn the whole Saptashati. I think they have online tutorials and lessons and seem very sincere. It might be helpful. I think they are doing a chapter a week and then building from there.
