Hey guys, a while back, I had heard a rather matter-of-factual mention of an ancient incense devoted to Kali Ma that includes the addition of rose. But, I never COULD find a formula for it. Might anyone, here, know of any Hindu scripture that contains such a formula?

Sat, June 14, 2008 - 4:02 PMThanks; and, I once had a Hindu man and woman (local shop owners) tell me that Mother Kali especially enjoys any incense with a really sweet and heady aroma, such as lilac, but especially lily or vanilla (those were tme, that they had on hand). Actually, I have a podcast devoted to Kali at: http://MacMorrighan.MyPodcast.Com -

Re: An Ancient Kali Ma Incense Recipe?
Sat, June 14, 2008 - 10:18 PMThere are two kinds of "good smelling things" :-) used in a traditional puja- one is the perfume(gandha) and the other is the incense which you burn(dhupa). The most traditional thing for incense is guggulu- which is known as a cleanser. If taken internally too, it cleans internally. Externally as well, in addition to smelling good, it again is supposed to cleanse. As far as I know roses came to India from Turkey along with the Turks and is not a traditional Indian flower.
I dont think this should really prevent you offering something to her out of love.

Re: An Ancient Kali Ma Incense Recipe?
Tue, June 17, 2008 - 7:35 AMI was also wondering about specific scents. Check here, bottom of the page: www.shivashakti.com/food.htm.
Camphor I knew about, but not the others. I'm guessing that kumkuma is saffron, though. The notion of roses must come from the fact that She is to be worshiped with red flowers, as I think Durga Putra is right: cultivation of roses came in with the Persians or Central Asians, and I believe - I'm going to check, because it's intriguing - that the indiginous wild roses of southern - ie. sub-Himalayan - India are mostly white or yellow. There's also a species of hibiscus - H. rosa-sinensis - called the Chinese Rose that's indigenous to the Malabar coast, so perhaps rose meant several different flowers and not simply the genus Rosa.
Anyway, that's way too much speculation for one morning... -

Re: An Ancient Kali Ma Incense Recipe?
Tue, June 17, 2008 - 7:59 AMi just received an e-mail from someone associated with Kalighat regarding this question;
"Any natural incense like original Sandal wood incense, 'Sorosanga' incense etc."
i asked again specifically about the rose incense you thought was mentioned in a scripture so i'll let you know how he replies

Re: An Ancient Kali Ma Incense Recipe?
Tue, June 17, 2008 - 8:35 AMKumkuma is not an incense- it is used for decorating the face. Women use it in India. To make it yourself, you can use turmeric powder and pour a bit of lime water on it( dilute and just enough to turn it red) it is a symbol of auspiciousness. In our homes every lady who comes home is offered kumkum. In the east/north of India- Sindoor(vermillion) is also used. Saffron is known as kumkuma flower( so you have the ayurvedic kukumadi thailam preparation etc). Saffron again AFAIK, is a relatively recent import from the last 1000 years or so.
HIbiscus rosacinencis is a red flower( also called shoe flower) which is definetely a favourite of Kali. This looks nothing like the rose though and has no fragrance whatsoever. Another favourite is what is known as Kasturi pushpa (AFAIK) in sanskrit( Kasturi by itself is musk in sanskrit) and arali in malayalam and tamil -scientific name : Nerium indicum. This has a subtle fragrance which is pleasing to Her. The plant has medicinal uses, but the seeds are poisonous however and is a popular means of well ' voluntarily leaving the body through non-yogic means'. One of the other fragrant flower is Champaka-(Michelia Champaka) which is yellow in colour. Ah that reminds me -you can offer musk AFAIK. -

Re: An Ancient Kali Ma Incense Recipe?
Sat, June 21, 2008 - 3:18 AMThat reminds me- Rose water- water with extract of rose in it- is also used for puja. It can be added in acamana water for example or for bathing the image of the goddess or yantra. It is supposed to be cooling and hence pleasing to her. Sandalwood paste is also pleasing for similar reasons and used for most deities- though it is special for Vishnu and his forms.
You get artificial rose scented water- but the real thing is preferred.

Mon, June 23, 2008 - 1:07 PMIn her epithets and names it is said that she delights in musk and camphor and wine flavored with camphor.
