Sindoor or Vermillion is the red paste applied to the forehead as tilakam, and used in Pujas. The commerical Sindoor sold over the counter contains Lead Oxides and is actually very toxic. I found that my headaches and twitching was caused by my exposure to sindoor that contains lead.
Recipe:
1 part tumeric
1 part slaked like/hydrated lime/calcium hydroxide
A little water.
Mix all these and the yellow tumeric will turn a brilliant red. Make sure to get all the pastey lime mixed in well with the tumeric. This is much better for you and much better for your puja.

Re: How to make real natural Sindoor/kumkum
Sun, April 20, 2008 - 11:49 PMOne thing about hydrated lyme that I've read is that if you use enough of it, it can cause alkaline burns. So I'd be frugal with the lyme in this mix and use as minimal of an amount as possible to get the results wanted.

Re: How to make real natural Sindoor/kumkum
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 1:20 PMTheir are many different substances people use as Tilakam. Sindoor which means vermillion, is traditionally made in the way I entailed. There are other types of tilakam that is based on the person's diety, or the occasion, etc.

Cinnabar - sindoor
Mon, April 21, 2008 - 6:47 AMHingula, traditionally used in India as sindoor, is a heavy mineral ore with a pale red colour.
It contains mercury and when mixed with water and placed upon the third eye is known to activate it.
English Name :Cinnabar
Whatever product you use will definately give that effect.

Re: Cinnabar - sindoor
Mon, April 21, 2008 - 7:15 PMwhen I was in Laguna with Jody for the puja, Usha said something funny about kumkum after the puja, that it looks like everybody's been shot in the forehead :)
on saturdays I will walk around with kumkum after puja. I don't really care what people think. -

Re: Cinnabar - sindoor
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 1:22 PMYeah that is what is used in modern times, but it is dangerous and should not be used. Other types of Sindoor are also mead with lead oxide because of it's red color. Real and traditional sindoor, before the adevent of chemical synthetic subsititues was made by mixing tumeric with hydrated lyme (calcium hydroxide, which is a naturally occuring substance). -

Re: Cinnabar - sindoor
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 1:25 PMWoops, I didn't thoroughly read what you wrote... and out of my overlooking, I thought you meant something else. I am familiar with Cinnabar as well, which is naturally occuring, but it is also highly toxic.
